About OwnRate

OwnRate is an independent, free reference for the US car ownership and running cost. We help you answer one practical question: what does this car actually cost to run? What a car really costs to run — EPA fuel cost, MPG/MPGe, EV vs gas, and 5-year cost to own.

What we publish

We track 70 popular US cars, SUVs and trucks — 37 gas, 11 hybrid, 3 plug-in hybrid and 19 electric. For each model you get its EPA fuel economy (MPG or MPGe), the EPA estimated annual fuel cost, electric range and tailpipe CO2, plus a transparent 5-year cost-to-own estimate. We also publish rankings (cheapest to run, most fuel-efficient, best EVs), EV-vs-gas and rival comparisons, and three calculators.

Where the data comes from

Every per-vehicle figure is from the EPA/DOE FuelEconomy.gov dataset, which is in the US public domain. The fuel prices that power the calculators are national averages from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). We never invent numbers: if we can't source a real figure for a model, we leave that model out. Any value we derive (cost per mile, 5-year totals, rankings) is a transparent calculation over those real inputs, documented on the methodology page.

What we are not

We are not a dealer, lender or insurer, and nothing here is financial advice. Our cost-to-own figures include illustrative assumptions for maintenance, insurance and depreciation — useful for comparison, but not a quote. Always verify with the official sources and get real quotes before buying. See our disclaimer.
